7 October 2021

The taxpayers of Fairfax, Virginia were put on notice this week that they will be shelling out tens of thousands of dollars to pay for a school resource officer who couldn’t control his anger and attacked a 5-year-old little boy — for singing in Spanish class. Pamela Ononiwu, 37, a mother of three, recently settled a lawsuit against Fairfax County Public Schools for the horrifying mistreatment her son suffered while in their care. My son kept trying to kick to get out of it, and the tighter the grip got.” ...

6 October 2021

  • Pamela Ononiwu sued the Fairfax County School Board after finding her five-year-old son, who has ADHD, held in a chokehold by a school resource officer
  • The officer was called to the kindergartner's classroom because he would not stop singing during his Spanish class
  • Ononiwu joined two other parents in suing the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) system for their restraint and seclusion procedures on students
  • The lawsuit, which named Ononiwu's son as DO, was recently settled with monetary relief and major changes to the school's policy
  • An independent review found that students in special education programs and students of color are more likely to be disciplined
  • Ononiwo advocates for the Keeping All Students Safe Act which would ban schools from physically restraining students in potentially life-threatening ways
  • Fairfax County is one of America's richest school districts, and recently hit the headlines over its decision to push critical race theory

A mom has settled with a school district after arriving to pick her five year-old son up for a dentist's appointment to find he'd been put in a chokehold by staff. Pamela Ononiwu launched the lawsuit against Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in Virginia after seeing her son - named in court papers as DO - restrained by a school resource officer at Fairview Elementary School in October 2018 while crying. Staff members told her DO, who suffers from ADHD, had been put in the chokehold after refusing to stop singing loudly during Spanish class. 'To my shock and horror, ...
