Veteran Attacked, His Service Dog Tasered After Angry Woman Wrongly Accused Him of Panhandling

20 October 2021

Joshua Rohrer is an honorably discharged Army veteran who, like tens of thousands of other veterans, is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after serving in Afghanistan. As a result of his illness, Rohrer hasn’t been able to hold down a job and is homeless. As panhandling is illegal in the city, Rohrer simply sits on the street and waves to folks as they walk by — which ended last week in a violent encounter with police. On October 13, Rohrer was doing what he normally did every day and was sitting at the intersection of Cox Road and Gaston ...

'It was really traumatizing' | Witnesses accuse Gastonia police of roughly arresting homeless veteran, tasing his service dog

14 October 2021

Several people gathered Thursday evening to protest an arrest made by the Gastonia Police Department, where witnesses claimed officers roughed up a homeless Army veteran and his service dog. Officers were called to the intersection of Cox Road and Gaston Mall Drive around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday for a complaint about a panhandler. Officers booked Joshua Rohrer on charges of illegal begging for money and resisting arrest. Both Rohrer's mother and his Veterans Affairs (VA) advocate, David Dowell, told WCNC Charlotte that Rohrer is an Army veteran who is battling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after serving overseas. Crystal Rogers said Rohrer ...

‘She was just doing her job’: Homeless vet loses service dog during arrest for panhandling

27 October 2021

Joshua Graham Rohrer, a homeless veteran in North Carolina, says he was wrongfully arrested and mistreated by Gastonia police officers, who also tased his service dog Sunshine, sparking support from those who witnessed the incident. The Gastonia Police Department told Military Times that although Rohrer will go to court for the charges against him, the department is now looking into the incident to “determine if the conduct of our officers was appropriate.” Rohrer was standing on a median near a Gastonia shopping center with Sunshine on Oct. 13 when a 911 caller contacted police. While Rohrer wasn’t bothering anybody, having ...

Cops Tase a Veteran's Service Dog During an Unconstitutional Arrest for Panhandling

28 October 2021

A homeless veteran routinely collected money at an intersection in Gastonia, North Carolina. On October 13, he paid for that with both his freedom and his service dog. That day, a woman phoned 911 to complain that Joshua Rohrer was "using [his] dog to get money." That dog was Rohrer's service animal, which he acquired for the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder he developed after completing a tour overseas in the U.S. Army. The operator was clearly confused. "Do you think the [dog is] in danger?" he asked. "Like, how [is he] using the dog to get money?" "They're using this ...

A "see something, say something" citizen falsely accused a homeless veteran and his service dog of begging for money, and police attacked them both.
