Fort Pierce police officer resigns for punching suspect, 2nd officer arrested

A police officer resigned from the Fort Pierce Police Department after being caught on camera punching and slapping a suspect at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. The incident happened on February 20. “It is a sad state of affairs that I am before you today," Fort Pierce Police Chief Diane Hobley-Burney said. Chief Hobley-Burney said police officers and crews with St. Lucie County Fire Rescue found the 38-year-old man unconscious and intoxicated on Okeechobee Road. Former officer gets jail time for punching man at hospital

A police officer caught on camera punching a suspect at a hospital in Fort Pierce will spend some time in jail. Albert Eckrode, 32, pleaded no contest to charges of felony battery, official misconduct, and false report to a law enforcement officer of an alleged crime. Eckrode faced up to 10 years in prison. Instead, he will get 90 days in jail and two years of probation as part of his sentence. He must also take anger management classes, avoid contact with the victim, relinquish his criminal justice certification, and pay restitution and court costs.
