A Palo Alto police officer who has been named in several lawsuits, including one stemming from his violent arrest of resident Julio Arevalo in front of the Happy Donuts store on El Camino Real in 2019, is no longer working in the Palo Alto Police Department, the Weekly has learned. The city would not state whether Agent Thomas DeStefano left willingly, was fired or was asked to resign, claiming that doing so would violate state law. City paid $250,000 to settle 2013 brutality suit against cop who has now been accused again

The Palo Alto Police Department’s Tom DeStefano, who was just named in a $3.8 million police brutality claim, was one of the officers accused in a lawsuit five years ago of breaking a man’s arm during a 2013 traffic stop. The city settled that suit for $250,000 after the man’s attorney started investigating the police department’s claim that two of its dash cams malfunctioned during the arrest.
