Michael Craig, 61, the building custodian in his apartment complex, called 911 to tell them he was being held hostage at knifepoint and when police showed up, they asked no questions and immediately killed him. The Chicago police officer who fatally shot a 61-year-old man inside his Gresham apartment last month had faced termination after a 2016 arrest on assault charges stemming from a drunken off-duty encounter with police. Former Police Supt. Eddie Johnson had moved to fire the officer, but he was reinstated by unanimous vote of the Police Board, which noted the officer had immediately entered treatment for alcohol abuse and had been cleared for duty by a psychologist. The Chicago police officer who shot and killed Gresham man Michael Craig had been suspended in the past, documents show. The documents reveal the officer was suspended in 2019 for actions that included threatening a fellow cop, and that the suspension lasted about three months.
