ACLU demands reform after Black girl arrested in Hawaii

18 October 2021

Honolulu police officers and officials with Hawaii’s public school system discriminated against a disabled Black child by handcuffing, arresting and interrogating the 10-year-old girl for a “run-of-the-mill” dispute between children, the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii said. The ACLU sent a letter Monday to the Honolulu Police Department, the state Department of Education and the state attorney general’s office demanding the statewide school district make policy changes, including forbidding staff from calling police on a student unless the student presents an imminent threat of significant harm to someone. Honowai Elementary officials called police to the Waipahu school in 2020 ...

The ACLU Says Hawaii Police Handcuffed and Arrested a 10-Year-Old Girl for Drawing a Picture

21 October 2021

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Hawaii says Honolulu police handcuffed and arrested a 10-year-old girl in January for drawing an offensive picture of another student. Now the civil liberties organization and a law firm representing the girl and her mother are demanding reforms from both the Hawaii Department of Education and Honolulu Police Department (HPD) to fix what they say is a clear pattern of misconduct involving school children. The ACLU and the law firm Caballero Law LLLC are representing Tamara Taylor and her 10-year-old daughter, who is identified only as "N.B." According to those groups, school officials ...

This time, it was a 10-year-old girl who was handcuffed, arrested, and jailed for drawing a picture that offended a parent of a student at the school. The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii has filed a lawsuit this week against the Honolulu Police Department, the state Department of Education and the state attorney general’s office over the incident. According to the lawsuit as detailed in a letter, they are asking these agencies to adopt policy changes, expunge ...

'Traumatized' Mom Speaks Out After Her Black Daughter, 10, Is Arrested at School Over Drawing

22 October 2021

The mother of a 10-year-old girl, who was arrested at her Hawaii school last year over a drawing, is speaking out about the "traumatic" ordeal. Tamara Taylor said she feels "disheartened" and singled out after the incident at her daughter's school in Waipahu, Honolulu, according to a letter issued on Monday by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Hawaii. Her daughter — who was only identified by the ACLU as N.B. — was arrested at Honowai Elementary School in January 2020 after a parent complained about an "offensive" sketch she and other students had drawn in response to another ...

Hawaii School, Police Department On The Verge Of Being Sued For Arresting A Ten-Year-Old Girl Over A Drawing

1 November 2021

Putting cops in schools is never a good idea. It only encourages school administrators to hand over discipline problems to the "proper authorities," which is what administrators used to be until the addition of law enforcement on campus. Having cops on tap also appears to encourage parents to demand a law enforcement response to disciplinary problems. That's what happened at a school in Hawaii, where a 10-year-old student was arrested over a drawing another student's parent didn't like. The school -- and the police department that performed the arrest -- are on the verge of being sued by the student ...
