He was removed as interim chief because he was under investigation for sexual misconduct, but he might still be running the department in the interim, because apparently it doesn't matter all that much that he's still under investigation for sexual misconduct.

Interim Lafayette Police Chief Wayne Griffin, who had been suspended with pay following allegations of sexual misconduct, will return to the department under a new title.
