Fired Louisville, Kentucky, police detective Brett Hankison
Fired Louisville, Kentucky, police detective Brett Hankison

Brett Hankison Is Not the Only Cop Who Acted Recklessly the Night Breonna Taylor Was Killed
The former detective's trial should not obscure the responsibility of the drug warriors who authorized, planned, and executed the deadly raid.

24 February 2022

The trial of the one Louisville police officer who faced criminal charges after the March 2020 raid that killed Breonna Taylor began yesterday. Former detective Brett Hankison is charged not with killing Taylor, an unarmed 25-year-old EMT who died in a hail of bullets after cops broke into her apartment in the middle of the night, but with endangering her neighbors by firing blindly into the building. Hankison "is the one that fired the shots that are the subject of this case," defense attorney Stew Matthews told the jury. "That's not the issue. The issue is: What was the reasoning ...

2 March 2022

Fired Louisville police detective Brett Hankison, 45, on Wednesday delivered emotional testimony, asserting he did nothing wrong by opening fire in the tragic 2020 shooting in which 26-year-old Breonna Taylor. “And Ms. Taylor’s family, it was just–She didn’t need to die that night,” Hankison said from the stand. The prosecutor made an objection. The judge called for a sidebar. Taylor’s mother Tamika Palmer ran out of court after Hankison said this. Taylor died on March 13, 2020 when cops in Louisville, Kentucky, executed a search warrant at her apartment as part of an investigation into an ex-boyfriend of hers. Her ...

A Jury Concludes That Blindly Firing 10 Rounds Into Breonna Taylor's Apartment Was Not 'Wanton Endangerment'
Brett Hankison's acquittal shows how difficult it is to hold cops accountable for abusing their power.

4 March 2022

On the night that Louisville police killed Breonna Taylor, Detective Brett Hankison fired 10 rounds into the side of her apartment, shooting through a glass patio door and a bedroom window that were both covered by blinds. He did this while two of his colleagues, Detective Myles Cosgrove and Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly, were inside the apartment, firing 22 rounds down a dark hallway in response to a single round that Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, had fired at the intruders, whom he mistook for violent criminals. Three of Hankison's bullets penetrated the wall separating Taylor's apartment from the neighboring unit, terrifying ...

No Cops Will Face Legal Consequences in Conjunction With Breonna Taylor Killing

4 March 2022

No police officers will face legal consequences in conjunction with the 2020 killing of Breonna Taylor. The only officer criminally charged in conjunction with the killing was former Louisville cop Brett Hankison, who faced three counts of wanton endangerment. On Thursday, a jury found Hankison not guilty. At trial, Hankison said he did "absolutely" nothing wrong during the no-knock raid that led to Taylor's death and could have killed others also. During the raid, Hankison shot at a glass door that led to an apartment neighboring Taylor's. That apartment was occupied by Cody Etherton, Chelsea Napper, and Napper's 5-year-old son. ...

The Only Cop Charged Over Breonna Taylor Murder Just Quietly Had His Charges ERASED

20 July 2022

On September 23, 2020, knowing that there would be backlash for their decision, streets in downtown Louisville were blocked off officials, police put on high alert, and government buildings were boarded up as officials announced the charges against former officer Brett Hankison for his role in the raid which left Breonna Taylor dead. The subsequent outrage was well deserved as Hankison was not charged for anything that led to the death of Taylor. Instead, this trigger happy cowboy cop was charged with “first degree wanton endangerment” for shooting like a madman which led to taxpayer-funded bullets flying into neighboring apartments ...

Four Cops Implicated in Breonna Taylor's Death Now Face Federal Charges
So far no one has been held criminally liable for the disastrous drug raid, which was based on a flimsy and falsified search warrant affidavit.

4 August 2022

The U.S. Department of Justice today announced federal charges against four current or former police officers who were involved in the drug raid that killed Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT and aspiring nurse, at her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 13, 2020. With one exception, this is the first time that any officers have been charged in connection with the deadly operation, which was based on a flimsy and falsified search warrant affidavit that relied almost entirely on Taylor's connection to a former boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover, a suspected drug dealer. Former detective Joshua Jaynes, who wrote that affidavit, is ...

DOJ Charges Officers For No Knock Warrant Lies That Led To The Killing Of Breonna Taylor

16 August 2022

There are very few things that are more dangerous for citizens and cops than no-knock warrants. These warrants allow cops to raid houses without announcing themselves, leading those on the receiving end to assume they’re being invaded by armed criminals. People who don’t know they’re dealing with cops defend themselves. Cops, who believe everyone should know they’re cops despite being allowed to enter unannounced, respond violently. People die. In some cases, cops die. And all that’s needed to allow cops to treat people as hostile combatants — even when they’ve been startled awake by armed intruders — is some boilerplate ...
