The veteran police officer who shot and killed a 20-year-old Minnesota man in April is set to argue that the incident was the result of an accident and mistake, according to court filings. In a Hennepin County court filing Thursday, former police officer Kim Potter said that she may offer the following four defenses in the shooting death of Daunte Wright: A) Innocent Accident. B) Innocent Mistake. C) Her perceived use of a Taser was reasonable. D) Lack of Causation It is undisputed that Potter shot and killed Wright during a traffic stop in April. Potter, who served as a ...

Judge Reverses Course, Decides to Televise Trial of Former Police Officer Kimberly Potter After All

10 November 2021

The trial of a former Minnesota police officer charged with shooting and killing a fleeing suspect will be televised after all. District Court Judge Regina M. Chu on Tuesday reversed course and ruled that cameras will be allowed in the trial of Kimberly Ann Potter. Chu previously ruled that cameras would not be allowed because Potter objected to television coverage of her trial. Potter, a former former Brooklyn Center, Minn. police officer, is charged with first-degree manslaughter and second-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of Daunte Wright, 20. During a traffic stop in April, Potter drew her service weapon and ...

Trial Begins for Cop Who Shot, Killed Unarmed Man on Video Over Stop for ‘Air Fresheners’

30 November 2021

Just miles from where George Floyd took his last breaths on Earth as they were squeezed from his body by officer Derek Chauvin, Daunte Wright was targeted by police over an alleged expired tag. Because the American police state is a violent behemoth which knows no self-restraint, a few moments into the stop and Wright would be killed at the hands of those who claim to protect him. Immediately after killing Wright, the department claimed it was an accident but once video surfaced, all that changed. The Hennepin County medical examiner concluded in April that Wright “died of a gunshot ...

Ex-Cop Kimberly Potter Downplays Severity of Daunte Wright Arrest Warrant During Testimony in Criminal Trial

17 December 2021

Kimberly Potter, the since-resigned Minnesota police officer on trial for shooting and killing Daunte Wright, wept on the witness stand when asked by her attorney to recount the events leading up to and surrounding Wright’s death. In direct testimony that lasted less than an hour, Potter initially downplayed the severity of the warrant that necessitated Wright’s arrest. The testimony contrasted with an attempt by one of her defense attorneys to bombastically stress the seriousness of the warrant during opening statements. Potter described the warrant that had been issued by a judge for Wright’s arrest as a “petty misdemeanor” warrant. Later, ...

Kim Potter found guilty on manslaughter charges in fatal shooting of Daunte Wright

23 December 2021

Kim Potter, the former Minnesota police officer who shot and killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright after she says she mistook her gun for a Taser, has been found guilty on manslaughter charges. A Minneapolis jury found Potter guilty Thursday on charges of first-degree and second-degree manslaughter in the killing of Wright, a Black man, in April 2021. Potter fatally shot Wright during a traffic stop. She says she thought her gun was a Taser, and video showed her shouting "Taser" and saying "Holy s--t. I just shot him." Potter testified in her defense during the trial, saying she was "very distraught" ...

A measly two years in the hoosegow:

Kim Potter sentenced to 2 years in Daunte Wright’s death

18 February 2022

Kim Potter, the former suburban Minneapolis police officer who said she confused her handgun for her Taser when she fatally shot Daunte Wright, was sentenced Friday to two years in prison. Wright’s family denounced the sentence as too lenient and accused the judge of giving more consideration to the white officer than the Black victim. Potter was convicted in December of first- and second-degree manslaughter in the April 11 killing of Wright, a 20-year-old Black motorist. She was sentenced only on the more serious charge in accordance with state law. Wright’s mother, Katie Wright, said after the sentencing that Potter ...

Kim Potter, Ex-Cop Who Killed Daunte Wright, Given 16-Month Sentence
“I feel cheated,” said Arbuey Wright, Daunte’s father

18 February 2022

This morning a Hennepin County judge sentenced Kim Potter—the police officer who shot and killed a 20-year old Black man named Daunte Wright last April in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center—to 16 months in prison and eight months on supervised release. She will also be fined $1,000. It is a lighter sentence than some expected. A 26-year veteran of the department, former police union president, and a field training officer, Potter claimed to have been reaching for her Taser when she pulled out her gun and shot and killed Wright. My colleague Samantha Michaels wrote about so-called “weapons confusion” ...
