State trooper accidentally hit and killed his brother when responding to his call for backup

James Lovelace heard the crash Monday night just outside his home in rural North Carolina, saw the State Highway Patrol cruisers and feared something bad had happened to his good friend, Trooper John Horton. Lovelace told WSOC he ran out to the scene and found Horton’s younger brother, James “Nick” Horton, also a state trooper. A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper, who was hit by his brother during a traffic stop Monday evening has died. According to North Carolina Highway Patrol, Trooper John S. Horton was hit at 8:58 p.m. by a responding trooper, Trooper James N. Horton, during a traffic stop at High Shoals Church Road and Goodes Grove Church Road. Highway Patrol said Trooper James Horton lost control of his vehicle upon approaching the traffic stop and hit the stationary patrol vehicle and subsequently struck Trooper John Horton and the detained driver who were standing along the roadside.
