That's the message from Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and law enforcement training experts contacted by The Canton Repository after police publicly released a four-minute body camera video from the Jan. 1 fatal confrontation. While expressing sympathy for James Williams' family, Yost doesn't sugarcoat the magnitude of Williams' actions that night. Advocates: Canton police fall short on '8 Can't Wait' policies

7 July 2020

City police meet the standards of only three “8 Can't Wait” policies, according to the advocacy group behind the national campaign. DeRay McKesson, co-founder of Campaign Zero, said the Canton City Police Department’s policies require officers to intervene and stop excessive force, prohibit shooting at a moving vehicle and establish a continuum of force. But the Canton Police Department fails to ban chokeholds, require de-escalation, exhaust all alternatives before shooting, require a warning before shooting and require comprehensive reporting, McKesson said, basing his assessment on the manual shared online by Ohio Community Coalition.
