Columbus police narcotics officers accused of distributing nearly 8 kilograms of fentanyl

Two Columbus Police officers with the Police Drug Cartel unit were arrested and charged with crimes related to distributing nearly eight kilograms of fentanyl, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Wednesday. Officers Marco R. Merino, 44, of Columbus, and John J. Kotchkoski, 33, of Marengo, Ohio, allegedly were involved in distributing seven-and-a-half kilograms of fentanyl, federal prosecutors said. According to an affidavit, Merino allegedly tried to recruit a confidential informant to traffic drugs with him, and promised law enforcement protection to the individual, and said he could intervene if other law enforcement agencies attempted to investigate the confidential informant.
