A Red Oak police officer, driving to an apartment fire, struck and killed a child Monday night, were identified according to the Iowa State Patrol. At about 7 p.m. Monday, three Red Oak police cars were driving northbound on North Broadway Street near the intersection of Joy Street when one of the cars struck a child in the road, said Iowa State Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Alex Dinkla. The child suffered fatal injuries in the crash, Dinkla said. The State Patrol is investigating. Dinkla said the officers "were responding in emergency mode" at the time of the crash.
