A potted plant thrives in the kitchen window of Patty Thorington's Davenport home. The anthurium was given to her by her son, Bobby Mitchell. He got it from AGAPE Center, a nonprofit food pantry in Bettendorf where he volunteered, when Thorington took a friend there at Mitchell's request. "He brought some stuff for me, and he said, ‘I got something special for you, Mom. Wait here, stay here,’ and he ran back up the stairs and he came back with this plant," Thorington recalled Aug. 19 from her living room, the wall behind her covered with photos of her son. ...

The killer cop gets a promotion:

Greg Hill will be promoted to the rank of sergeant. Greg was raised in Camanche, IA and graduated from Camanche High School. After high school Greg attended Kirkwood Community College where he earned an Associate’s degree in criminal justice. Greg continued his education by attending Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and administration and a minor in computer science. After graduation, Greg worked on his family dairy farm and another farm in the Eldridge area before being hired by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy in June of 2008. In 2013 Greg became a narcotics agent at the Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group for 5 1/2 years, which included being a supervisor for 2 1/2 years. During that time Greg also became a canine handler for the Sheriff’s Office where he was partnered up with his canine, Spike, who is still an active member of the Sheriff’s Office. In 2018 Greg returned to patrol as a third shift patrol deputy until 2019 when he join the Scott County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit. In Greg’s spare time he can be found working around the house, spending time with family and friends, and in a boat, bass fishing. Greg will continue on in the Special Operations Unit.

$5 million wrongful death civil suit filed in fatal shooting involving a Scott County Sheriff's deputy

A$5 million civil lawsuit wrongful death suit has been filed against a Scott County Sheriff's deputy and the Scott County Attorney on behalf of man killed in 2018 after attempting to flee a traffic stop. Robert Mitchell was pulled over by a Scott County Sheriff's Department cruiser at 1:08 a.m. on October 23, 2018. The routine stop by Deputy Greg Hill for a bad brake light took place in a Menard's parking lot on North Brady Street. Deputy Meghann Messmore rolled up to the scene and a call to dispatch revealed Mitchell was wanted for a minor crime. But instead ...
