Unarmed 75-year-old Tasered without warning by Colorado officer: ‘What did I do?’

23 July 2021

When police knocked on Michael Clark’s door in Idaho Springs, Colo., in May, he emerged in his underwear, holding a swordlike weapon. Police ordered him to drop it, and the 75-year-old complied, placing it on a shelf several feet behind him. “Get on the ground!” a female officer screamed, her weapon pointed at Clark. “No,” Clark said, trying to explain the dispute he was having with his neighbors. Without warning, a male officer raised his Taser, pointed it at Clark’s torso and fired. Clark fell backward into his apartment and went unconscious. The police then dragged Clark’s body out of ...

4 April 2021

The 75-year-old man who was allegedly assaulted by an officer with the Idaho Springs Police Department (ISPD) filed a lawsuit against officers and the department Monday morning. He claimed that police tased him, dragged his unconscious body out of his apartment, and took a sword from a high shelf in his unit and dropped it in the hallway. In the federal lawsuit, Michael Clark claimed violations of his civil rights under federal and Colorado constitutions by two officers — Nicholas Hanning and Ellie Summers — and their supervising officer, Cpl. That evening, Nicholas Hanning, 35, and another officer with the Idaho Springs Police Department (ISPD) responded to an alleged assault along the 3200 block of Riverside Drive. Family ‘Disgusted’ After Cop Who Tasered, Beat Innocent Elderly Grandpa Gets Sweetheart Deal

7 December 2021

On May 30, 75-year-old Michael Clark had harmed no one, broken no law, and was asleep in his home when Idaho Springs cops barged in through his front door and attacked him without warning. For months, Clark and his family have been demanding justice and they thought they would see it after officer Nicholas Hanning was fired and charged. However, that justice appears to be dwindling. This week, according to an email sent from the Clear Creek District Attorney’s Office to Clark’s attorney, Hanning is being offered a plea deal that will reduce his charge of third degree assault on ...

Ex-Colorado cop pleads guilty to using Taser on man in 70s

9 December 2021

A former Colorado police officer who used a Taser on a 75-year-old man without warning, requiring the man to be taken to the hospital, pleaded guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor assault charge in a deal in which he permanently relinquished his right to serve as a law enforcement officer in the state. An attorney for the man's family objected to the deal, claiming that prosecutors showed former Idaho Springs Officer Nicholas Hanning special treatment and asking the judge to consider appointing a special prosecutor to take on the case, KUSA-TV reports. Judge Cynthia Jones conditionally accepted the plea but scheduled ...
